Digi Pack Plan

This is the planning stage of our digi pack. In this view it has colour, however this was only used to help show what we are trying to draw. We will actually use a greyscale colour theme, added with khaki font to help represent our theme of lose, and loneliness.

Production Update - 9th December

Addition of actress
We are planning to incorporate a female into our music video. We decided to do this as we feel we needed something else to catch the viewer's attention, because right now there are too many shots of just George, which makes our video a bit repetitive. The female we have chose to use, is Amy as, although it works with our shooting schedule because she if also free these days, she also goes well with our brand, as she is the same age, and fits in with our music video well. By adding a female, this should show our storyline better of George being lost over a girl, which we will show by George and Amy becoming further apart as the music video progresses.

Filming
We are planning to film there shots on, Sunday 11th December and Monday 12 December. On sunday, we are planning to film at night, and do the shots with the fire in at George's house. We just need a few shots at the end of our music video, which will consist of George standing next to the fire, thinking of the girl, and a shot of George burning a picture of the female, to represent his feelings. On Monday, we are going to Morden after school to film the shots needed with George and Amy. We have a few shots ideas, such as both walking away from the camera, and towards the camera, both sitting on the bench together, etc. Then when it becomes night, we will go back to the ally, we filmed at before, and do some shots there with our new addition of artist.

25th November Editing Post

Song Permission

Response to 1st Draft Feedback

After handing in our first draft on the 22nd November, which had been completed the day before. We received both a grade and constructive feedback to improve the grade. In which we received a C+ grade as well as some comments on how the shots with lens flares off the river Thames were highly effective. However, we also got a piece of constructive criticism stating that we needed something else running throughout the video, for example a storyline which keeps being jumped back to. Due to our video becoming very repetitive with the artist standing with a guitar in his hands.

Therefore, in response to this feedback, I believe that we should get a female performer, and create a storyline around the Artist losing the girl, and wanting her to "come home". This storyline may be around 1-1:30 minutes long and it is played periodically thorough the music video, and the spaces around the story are filled with our favourite shots of the current draft.

Filming - 11th November

We went back to Putney after realising some shots we did before, were out of focus and too shaky to use for our first draft. We did some more esthablishing shots of just the bridge, then as we edited before we went out to film, we knew which shots we were missing. This made us organised when filming as we knew exactly what we needed to do, such as more lip syncing shots etc, which made this filming session alot more successful. Also this time, the weather was a lot better as the sun was out so we were able to get the lens flares we wanted. Lastly, the first time we came to Putney, we werent able to get a guitar, however this time we did, so we recorded many shots with the artist and the guitar.

Reflective Editing Post

Tuesday 1st November -
  • This was our first editing day, which we only had shots for one location (Morden) at this time. We just started our project on Premiere Pro, importing all the shots we have filmed on to the draft, and started to link up some lip syncing shots, to the correct position in the song.
  • Overall, we used this time to focus on the Morden establishing at the start of the song where there is no lyrics.
Tuesday 8th November -
  • On Tuesday, we now had shots from Putney and Morden so our editing was mainly to link up the lip syncing shots to the song. Once we done this, we could cut shots where we wanted, and start making up our music video, when all the shots were linked up with the song correctly.
  • Overall, we used this time to link up our lip syncing shots, at Morden and Putney, to the correct position in the song.

Tuesday 15th November -
  • Now that we had all our shots from 2 locations into Premiere Pro, we now could start making our music video draft by cutting up shots and making it match to the beat. After this period of 3 hours to edit, we had our shots cutting to the beat, and verse 1 & 2 nearly complete, with just a few more shots needed to put in. To be able to do more, we need to film at night, where we need to start a fire which we are doing on the Sunday 20th November.

Reflective Production Posts

Filming days - 21st & 31st October.

On the 21st we mainly filmed establishing shots as our artist, George wasn't available, which we then played around with the camera, trying to get a lens flare and out of focus to in focus shots, etc. The only problem was some shots we filmed were out of focus which we didn't notice at the time but could see when we got the shots on the computer, and also some shots were too shaky to use in our music video. Next time, we will practice more with the fig rig to make our shots more steady, and to film the shots more than once to try and achieve a better focus.
From these 2 filming sessions we can see that, we need to reshoot some shots from Morden park which were shaky (mainly tracking shots), and need to go to Putney bridge and georges house. Our next filming session will be Friday 4th November.

Talent Release Form

For performers to be in our video we need them to sign a talent release form agreeing that they have given permission for us to use them in our music video.

Actors, Props And Costumes List

Location: Stayton Road

Here are 3 photos of the roads we will be filming on at night, for the music video. We will use the LED Light in this location, as we are filming at night so we feel the lighting can be very effective if the light is used.

Location: Morden Park

All the shots are where we plan to film in Morden, so the first image is of the tree we want to use in the first verse when George is lip syncing. Second location is the field where George will walk through, some lip syncing shots and some establishing shots. Last location, is the bench where George will be playing the guitar. There aren't many issues with this location as we have permission to film there, and its not too far away so we can film there as often as we like, however the weather needs to be the same throughout, which shouldn't be too hard to achieve.

Your Star Image

Imagine Dragons
Twenty One Pilots
Arctic Monkeys
In our music video, the genre Indie Rock, our star image needs to be fashionable and follow the usual indie rock costume. Our start should appear with mostly dark coloured clothing, as black is a common colour within the genre. Skinny black jeans, with black boots and a type of indie rock top on is how I imagine our start should look. Props are common in the genre, with maybe skateboarding, or a guitar within the music video will look good as close ups of the musical instruments are common within rock videos.

Song Choice

Viola Beach - Swings and Waterslides

We have chosen this song, and in particular this band as they are british which makes it easier when we lip-sync the song and also it is a indie rock song which is the genre we want. They unfortunately drove off a bridge in a tragic event this february, and all members of the band died including their manager.
R.I.P River Reeves, Jack Dakin, Kris Leonard, Thomas Lowe.

Our initial ideas for the song features our artist feeling isolated as we have some good shot ideas we want to use, such as him next to a tree from a long distance, showing he's lonely etc.

My Genre: Indie Rock Song Analysis 1

Twenty One Pilots - Stressed Out
Camerawork:
  • 1:16 - Close ups- To show the artist singing, making the audience focus on him.
  • 0:10 - Low angle shots- When he rides in on his bike, what young people usually get up to.
  • 0:46 - Mid Shot- When he gets to his mates house, it is used to show us what they are doing, e.g the handshake.
  • 2:37 - Long shot- Showing the audience the whole shot.
  • 0:10 - Tracking shot - Follows the artist when on the bike, makes the audience focus on him.
Editing:
  • 2:29 - White backdrop- Greenscreen is used of a white background to show us it is different from the rest of the video, it is in their heads.
  • 3:21 - Black background/Red eyes- Makes us focus on the artist singing, as he is the only thing in the shot.
  • 2:00 - Cuts to the beat so the video matches the lyrics, but also quickens up the narrative.
  • 2:15 - Fast paced editing - A lot of shots in a short space of time, keeps with the beat of the music.

Carol Vernallis Theory

WSTRN - A-List
  • Carol Vernallis theory includes no typical shot order which is used in this video, as a music video's purpose isnt used to show a narrative, it is used to keep us interested when watching the video, and listening to the song at the same time. For example, in the video above, shots from the bar to the grey background with lights are shown at different times during the video, not in order.
  • Time, space, character and narrative are revealed incompletely, meaning they are all revealed at different times during the video.
  • Discontinuity is shown in the music video, A-List as there is cuts used between shots that cut to the beat. This is used so the video matches the music we are listening to.
  • Visual hooks create continuity which is shown in the video above as effects are used to make the artists float across the screen which means no cuts are needed, and keeps the continuity. This is used to make the video more visual and easier to watch. Another example is the setting used, as they are in a beach hut, it makes the audience focus on that, keeping the continuity.
  • Multiplicity of incomplete shots/paths. This is used as there is many different shots used in a music video, and not every shot ends.
  • Sometimes all elements are equal, sometimes one is dominant. Elements such as, colour, editing etc are dominant at different times during the video.

Brief

Our task is to create a promotional package for the album of a new artist, including a music video, advertisement and a digipack.

Director Profile

Director: Jonas Akerlund

Jonas Akerlund is a Swedish director and drummer. He is best known for directing music videos, which are often mock forms of movie trailers and short films.
For example, the video below, Moves Like Jagger shows a kind of movie like trailer, with a old fashioned feel to it. This is because, at the start it is black and white, with the border around the video making it feel like a old camera is filming it.
This is also the case in Lady Gaga's Paparazzi music video as it is also in the form of a movie trailer.
Jonas Akerlund directs music videos in a different way to other directors, which makes him unique and his videos interesting to watch, which is why I enjoy them.

Non-Conventional Video

Justin Bieber - Sorry

  • Justin Bieber, the artist of the music video, doesn't feature. This is non-conventional as often the artist is in the video singing or dancing to the beat of the song.
  • Throughout the video, there is always a white backdrop. This doesn't follow the typical music video, as firstly it never changes location, and second it is always the same colour, not a location or a place.
  • Also, the dancers that do feature in the video never change outfit, which is rare in a music video.
  • There is no specific location.
  • This video doesn't have a variety of different shots, as in close ups, long shots etc. Most of the shots are the same.
  • Not many props are used throughout the video.

    Low Budget Music Videos

Group 4 - Just Got Paid
    • This low budget music video appears to have a higher production value due to the way they use lighting, costume and location.
    • The lighting used in this music video, makes the video appear much higher quality than it actually is, due to the way they use it. For example, at the start when each light turns on after the other, it makes it look more professional & overall just better to watch. Low-key lighting is used to also make the group stand out, with the spotlight on them.
    • The costume used in this video, looks expensive such as a suit & tie, and makes the group look more professional.
    • The location of an expensive, big house also gives the impression of a higher production video, even though they had such low budget.
    •  From this music video, it shows costume and location play a big part in making the production look professional. So in my music piece, I will make sure we think carefully about how we want to look, and where we want it to be set. Also lighting, in this case, is important as it makes the group stand out, which we can use in our video.

Imogen Heap - A2 Music Video
    • This low budget music video appears to have a higher production value due to the way they use fast paced editing, short takes, and cross cutting.
    • Fast paced editing is used throughout the video which makes it looks professional and gives it a higher production value. This is because it has alot of different shots used, due to many short takes, which goes to the beat of the music, and matches the lip-syncing.
    • Many different short takes are used, with low-key lighting used in most of them. All shots changes to the beat of the song, which makes it look like a high quality music video.
    • Special effects are used of some distorted videos etc, which also makes the video look high quality, as well as creating a tense atmosphere throughout the song, which would have been very time consuming.
    • Superimposition is used when distorting an image, and is a special effect to make certain colours stand out, which makes it appear as a high quality piece even with a low budget.
    • A different kind of style is used in this video, which is used to create a type of tense atmosphere. It is done by using short takes, so many shots can be used very quickly, and how they use lighting very effectively.
    •  In this music video, production is made to look professional by the use of lighting, and fast paced editing. They use a lot of shots in a short space of time, with low-key lighting throughout, creating a type of tense and creepy atmosphere.
