Your Star Image

Imagine Dragons
Twenty One Pilots
Arctic Monkeys
In our music video, the genre Indie Rock, our star image needs to be fashionable and follow the usual indie rock costume. Our start should appear with mostly dark coloured clothing, as black is a common colour within the genre. Skinny black jeans, with black boots and a type of indie rock top on is how I imagine our start should look. Props are common in the genre, with maybe skateboarding, or a guitar within the music video will look good as close ups of the musical instruments are common within rock videos.

Song Choice

Viola Beach - Swings and Waterslides

We have chosen this song, and in particular this band as they are british which makes it easier when we lip-sync the song and also it is a indie rock song which is the genre we want. They unfortunately drove off a bridge in a tragic event this february, and all members of the band died including their manager.
R.I.P River Reeves, Jack Dakin, Kris Leonard, Thomas Lowe.

Our initial ideas for the song features our artist feeling isolated as we have some good shot ideas we want to use, such as him next to a tree from a long distance, showing he's lonely etc.

Carol Vernallis Theory

WSTRN - A-List
  • Carol Vernallis theory includes no typical shot order which is used in this video, as a music video's purpose isnt used to show a narrative, it is used to keep us interested when watching the video, and listening to the song at the same time. For example, in the video above, shots from the bar to the grey background with lights are shown at different times during the video, not in order.
  • Time, space, character and narrative are revealed incompletely, meaning they are all revealed at different times during the video.
  • Discontinuity is shown in the music video, A-List as there is cuts used between shots that cut to the beat. This is used so the video matches the music we are listening to.
  • Visual hooks create continuity which is shown in the video above as effects are used to make the artists float across the screen which means no cuts are needed, and keeps the continuity. This is used to make the video more visual and easier to watch. Another example is the setting used, as they are in a beach hut, it makes the audience focus on that, keeping the continuity.
  • Multiplicity of incomplete shots/paths. This is used as there is many different shots used in a music video, and not every shot ends.
  • Sometimes all elements are equal, sometimes one is dominant. Elements such as, colour, editing etc are dominant at different times during the video.

Brief

Our task is to create a promotional package for the album of a new artist, including a music video, advertisement and a digipack.

Director Profile

Director: Jonas Akerlund

Jonas Akerlund is a Swedish director and drummer. He is best known for directing music videos, which are often mock forms of movie trailers and short films.
For example, the video below, Moves Like Jagger shows a kind of movie like trailer, with a old fashioned feel to it. This is because, at the start it is black and white, with the border around the video making it feel like a old camera is filming it.
This is also the case in Lady Gaga's Paparazzi music video as it is also in the form of a movie trailer.
Jonas Akerlund directs music videos in a different way to other directors, which makes him unique and his videos interesting to watch, which is why I enjoy them.

Non-Conventional Video

Justin Bieber - Sorry

  • Justin Bieber, the artist of the music video, doesn't feature. This is non-conventional as often the artist is in the video singing or dancing to the beat of the song.
  • Throughout the video, there is always a white backdrop. This doesn't follow the typical music video, as firstly it never changes location, and second it is always the same colour, not a location or a place.
  • Also, the dancers that do feature in the video never change outfit, which is rare in a music video.
  • There is no specific location.
  • This video doesn't have a variety of different shots, as in close ups, long shots etc. Most of the shots are the same.
  • Not many props are used throughout the video.
